Forensic & Addiction Recovery Focus Occupational Therapy

Forensic occupational therapy is a branch in the mental health services that occupational therapy can provide. It is a career focused on assisting those who are or have experience incarceration. Another focus of this field of study is addiction recovery. Because trauma is so very common within these two communities, it is trauma based in heart. Therefore, Forensic occupational therapy (FOT) is assisting those who are fighting or in active addiction, trauma or are currently experiencing or have experienced incarceration “to develop coping skills and aid in rational thought through meaningful occupations to assist forgiveness, self-acceptance, and courage to needed to live day-to-day.” (air, 2019)

Breaking stigma and reintegrating this population back into society will benefit us all by making functional adults who want to live independent lives yet just do not know how.

Something about
Myself.

Hello,

My name is Sara Mae Welsh. I hold a Master's in Science in Occupational Therapy from Spalding University. I have focused my career and studies in Mental Health with a passion for Forensics which is working with those who are  or have a history of incarceration, Addiction Recovery and trauma informed care.

I am currently practicing at a local pediatrics clinic to help children live their best life, yet my passion is mental health. I live to provide occupational therapy to normalize their natural environment, integrate negative associations; and role re-introduction by incorporating life skills that will allow them to return to the community, work-life and home. This can be facilitated by providing groups and one-on-one interventions. I am developing a practice model and theory that will assist others in finding assistance in this field with expansion of FOT in the United States.

Please excuse the misspelled words. I just got the new word and will be updating the old documents. Think of it as my cork, lol.
