Forensic & Addiction Recovery Focus Occupational Therapy
Forensic occupational therapy is a branch in the mental health services that occupational therapy can provide. It is a career focused on assisting those who are or have experience incarceration. Another focus of this field of study is addiction recovery. Because trauma is so very common within these two communities, it is trauma based in heart. Therefore, Forensic occupational therapy (FOT) is assisting those who are fighting or in active addiction, trauma or are currently experiencing or have experienced incarceration “to develop coping skills and aid in rational thought through meaningful occupations to assist forgiveness, self-acceptance, and courage to needed to live day-to-day.” (air, 2019)
Breaking stigma and reintegrating this population back into society will benefit us all by making functional adults who want to live independent lives yet just do not know how.
